چکیده

A theory of a confined two-dimensional electrolyte is presented. The positive and negative ions, interacting by a 1/r potential, are constrained to move on an interface separating two solvents with dielectric constants epsilon(1) and epsilon(2). It is shown that the Debye-Hückel type of theory predicts that this two-dimensional Coulomb fluid should undergo a phase separation into a coexisting liquid (high-density) and gas (low-density) phases. We argue, however, that the formation of polymerlike chains of alternating positive and negative ions can prevent this phase transition from taking place.

Peculiarity of the Coulombic Criticality ?

We study the Coulombic criticality of ionic fluids within the restricted primitive model (RPM).We indicate that for the RPM, analysed in terms of the field of charge density, the corresponding LandauGinzburg-Wilson effective Hamiltonian has a negative φ4-coefficient. In that case, solving the “exact” renormalization group equation in the local potential approximation, we show that close initial...

Field-theoretic Approach to Ionic Systems: Criticality and Tricriticality

A Landau-Ginzburg functional of two order parameters (charge-density φ and mass-density deviation η) is developed in order to yield a field theory relevant to ionic lattice gases as well as a family of off-lattice models of ionic fluids that go beyond the restricted primitive model (RPM). In a mean-field (MF) approximation an instability of a uniform phase with respect to charge fluctuations wi...

Phase transitions and criticality in small systems: vapor-liquid transition in nanoscale spherical cavities.

Phase transformations in fluids confined to nanoscale pores, which demonstrate characteristic signatures of first-order phase transitions, have been extensively documented in experiments and molecular simulations. They are characterized by a pronounced hysteresis, which disappears above a certain temperature. A rigorous interpretation of these observations represents a fundamental problem from ...

Crossover Scales at the Critical Points of Fluids with Electrostatic Interactions

Criticality in a fluid of dielectric constant D that exhibits Ising-type behavior is studied as additional electrostatic (i.e., ionic) interactions are turned on. An exploratory perturbative calculation is performed for small ionicity as measured by the ratio of the electrostatic energy e/D a (of two univalent charges, ±e, separated by the atomic/ionic diameter a) to kB T 0 c which represents t...

Heat capacity behavior in the critical region of the ionic binary mixture ethylammonium nitrate-n-octanol

At temperatures between 30 degrees C and 58 degrees C we have recorded the heat capacity of the ionic ethylammonium nitrate-n-octanol mixture of critical composition and also of the constituents. Different samples of the binary mixture have been measured with its upper critical demixing temperature T(c) varying between 41.04 degrees C and 46.87 degrees C, depending on small traces of water with...
